Overview

The Bilingual Language Profile (BLP) is an open-access instrument for assessing language dominance among bilinguals. The BLP questionnaire is composed of 19 self-report items relating to language history, language use, language proficiency, and language attitudes.

An individual bilingual’s responses on the 19 items are compiled to yield a composite dominance score or index. In addition, separate scores on BLP subtests (modules) can be used to address more specific questions in bilingualism.

Using the BLP

Designed for ease of use, the BLP can be administered by non-specialists, and takes respondents around 10 minutes to complete. The BLP may be administered in a paper-and-pencil format, or online in a self-scoring version.

The BLP items have been translated into dozens of languages and the instrument is available in a variety of language pairings.
